J’ai surpris une mésange bleu en train d’essayer de décortiquer une graine de la taille d’un smarties… Pas facile !

Regardez bien, ce papillon va bientôt devenir le repas d’une petite araignée bien camouflée. La surface des feuilles du chêne pubescent est recouverte de petits poils tout comme cette araignée de la famille des Thomisidae. Je ne parle même pas de la couleur, le vert de Heriaeus sp. ne se différencie pas de celui des feuilles. En bref, un camouflage parfait. Pour tout avouer, je n’avais pas vu l’araignée lorsque j’ai commencé à photographier ce papillon… J’adore ce genre de surprise ! (Photo prise en Haute Provence avec un Canon G10, mai 2010).

Look carefully and you’ll see a little green and hairy spider about to capture the butterfly. This spider camouflage is just about perfect, its skin is as hairy as downy oak leaves. Not to mention the colour, their greens are identicals. It belong to the Thomisidae family and is probably a Heriaeus sp. At first, when I starded shooting this butterfly I had no idea the spider was there. You can imagine my surprise when I realize what I had in front of my camera. Libellule sur simulateur de vol

Les libellules ou plus largement les odonates chassent au vol des petits insectes. Leur habileté et vitesse dans les airs sont impressionnantes. Bien entendu cette maîtrise est le fruit d'un entrainement intensif, comme le témoigne cette photo où l'on peut voir une libellule aux commandes de son simulateur de vol.

La photo date de cet été lors d'une promenade dans l'Estérel, sous une canicule assommante... La végétation en arrière plan donne un vert assez remarquable et fait bien ressortir le sujet.

Cette photo date déjà de quelques années mais le souvenir de ce moment insoupçonné reste gravé dans ma mémoire. En marchant à pas de loup dans la brume épaisse j’espérai sans trop d'espoir pouvoir m’approcher des chevreuils et faire quelques clichés. Ce qui arriva dépassa toutes mes attentes. Le chevreuil était là, à quelques mètres de moi. Nous nous sommes observés à travers le brouillard un instant et puis en l'espace d'une seconde sa silhouette avait disparu pour redonner place au blanc.

Sur les berges de l'Ariège puis de la Garonne ce parc offre un refuge paisible pour de nombreuses espèces. Voici quelques photos d’une promenade en fin de soirée près des étangs. Les couleurs d’automne apparaissent sur les grands arbres et le feuillage se reflètent dans l’eau. Un ragondin ébouriffé flotte près de la berge un peu intrigué par ma venue. Au loin, des canards mandarins nettoient leur magnifique plumage.

Le pouillot véloce

Le pouillot véloce (Phylloscopus collybita) est un petit passereau commun. Il est difficile à observer et surtout à prendre en photo. Il n’arrête jamais de bouger dans le feuillage des arbres comme en témoigne la première photo de ce billet. On le reconnait à ses sourcils jaunes et à la rayure noire sur ces yeux. Il se nourrit de petits insectes qui trouve dans les branchages. Il est capable de faire des acrobaties aérienne pour attraper un moustiques au vol. Voici quelques clichés de cet oiseau hyper actif prises depuis mon balcon.

Certains animaux sauvages sont beaucoup moins farouches lorsqu’on s’approche en voiture plutôt qu’à pieds. Notre silhouette de bipède est associée à un danger alors que la voiture est mieux tolérée. Donc, depuis la fenêtre de ma voiture j’ai pris quelques photos d’une colonie de héron garde-boeufs (Bubulcus ibis) qui chassait dans un champ en jachère. A plusieurs reprises des querelles éclataient dès lors qu’un héron dénichait un mulot, proie apparemment très convoitée. Posté pendant une vingtaine de minutes j’ai été surpris du nombre de mulots attrapés. La colonie comptait environ trente individus et pas un mètre carré de champ n’a été épargné!

En voilà un qui va manger copieusement ce soir…

Frelon asiatique

Le frelon asiatique (Vespa velutina) est un frelon de petite taille et moins coloré comparé au frelon européen (Vespa crabro) auquel nous sommes habitués. Il est originaire d'Asie du sud-est et a été introduit il y a quelques années dans le sud-ouest de la France où il s’est malheureusement très bien acclimaté. Ce frelon ne présente pas une menace particulière pour l’homme puisque sa piqure est comparable à celle d’une guêpe et n’a pas un comportement plus agressif que cette dernière. Par contre c’est un vorace qui s’attaque aux autres insectes et a un vilain penchant pour les abeilles.

J’ai réalisé il y a quelques jours l’ampleur de cette menace quand, en observant des ruches sauvages sous un toit de maison, j’ai vu ces frelons à l’œuvre. J’avais repéré ces ruches depuis quelques mois déjà et j’ai compris que quelques choses ne tournait pas rond. Le va-et-viens des abeilles avait presque disparu et un grand nombre d’abeilles étaient amassées à l’entré de la ruche. A une dizaine de centimètres de là, postés en vol stationnaire, une demi douzaines de frelons asiatiques interceptaient chaque abeille qui voulait rentrer à la ruche. Dès qu'une abeille était capturé, le frelon partait se poser dans un arbre voisin pour engloutir sa proie.

Puis deux…

Le frelon s’accroche la tête en bas avec ses pattes arrières le temps de décortiquer l’abeille.

Et pour finir, une apparition tout à fait inattendue, une musaraigne qui en sortant le nez du toit s’est retrouvée au milieu des abeilles. Les piqures d’abeilles l’ont fait chuter et je n’ai pas retrouvé sa trace au pied du mur…

Portrait d'un lézard vert

On peut assez facilement approcher un lézard vert. Plusieurs fois il m'est arrivé de pouvoir approcher mon objectif macro à quelques centimètres de l'animal. La technique est simple, pas besoin de camouflage ou de stratagèmes compliqués. Il "suffit" de s'approcher très lentement de l'animal sans lui montrer que c'est à lui que l'on s'intéresse. Au bout de quelques minutes d'approche, le lézard ne nous identifie plus comme un danger et le tour est joué. Il arrive même que l'on éveille sa curiosité !

“1, 2, 3, Soleil !” avec les chevreuils dans le jardin

Dès le lendemain matin de l’acquisition de mon nouveau zoom sigma 120-400mm stabilisé, les chevreuils sont venus nombreux dans le jardin pour me permettre de faire des premiers essais. Le peu de lumière disponible n’a pas rendu les choses faciles mais cette première prise en main m’a rendu enthousiaste. Le stabilisateur est vraiment efficace et à 400mm ( x 1,5) le sujet rempli l’image plus facilement !

J’essaye de m’approcher petit à petit du sujet mais même le déclenchement de l’appareil photo le met en alerte. Je me fige dès qu’il regarde vers moi et attend qu’il replonge la tête dans les herbes pour avancer de nouveau.

Ces photos sont prises à 800 iso, en faible lumière. Les branchanges et hautes brindilles ont été une difficulté pour l’autofocus mais finalement je n’ai eu que très peu de photos floues.

Et oui, on est en mars, les températures remontent doucement, les jours rallongent et les arbres commencent à fleurir ! Ca sent le printemps… Et bien NON ! La neige est revenue avec les températures qui vont avec. Dommage pour la végétation, c’était un faux départ.

Un petit essai de photo HDR (combinaison de photos prises avec des temps d’exposition différents) pour le (timide) lever de soleil.

Témoignage de l’éternelle haine des corneilles/corbeau envers les rapaces. Ici, un milan harcelé par une corneille noire.

Deux chevreuils étaient de sortie.

Ces temps-ci la météo a malheureusement réservé les beaux jours à la semaine et non pas au week-end. J’espère que cette tendance ne va pas durer.

J’espère que 2010 sera plein de bonheur.

I wish you all a wonderful year 2010.

Je commence à fouiller dans mes dossiers et je ressors des photos qui m’ont plu petit à petit. Pour commencer : ce lapin qui sort la tête des herbes pour mieux garder un oeil sur le photographe.

J’ai aussi créé un album qui regroupe tout les photos prises dans un espace vert de la ville de Boulder(Colorado, USA) à quelques centaines de mètres de la maison où je logeais durant mon séjour là-bas. J’ai toujours été étonné de la diversité d’animaux sauvages présente “en ville”. J’ajouterai des photos à cet album au fur et à mesure qu’avance l’exploration de mes dossiers…

I started going trough my photo folders on my computer and I’ll try to update my blog with photos that I liked. To start with, this rabbit standing up in the grass to keep an eye on the photographer.

I created an album where I’ll try to gather photos of wildlife taken in Boulder. I’ve always been impressed by the diversity there.

Grèbe huppé

Today I woke up fairly early and went out for a walk. It’s been a while since the last time I did this… I never plan where I’m going. I just wander along the trails until I encounter something interesting. This morning I ended up taking pictures of great crested grebe in a lake. It was a nice cold and sunny morning.

After spending some time in Sweden for my master and in USA for several internships, I finally graduated in September 2009. With my master in environmental engineering and a major in atmospheric sciences I decided to go on for a PhD. So here we are. I started last month (October 09) a PhD in Toulouse at Laboratoire d’Aérologie (Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées). I will be working on biogenic volatile organic compound emissions in the Mediterranean area. In real words : chemicals emissions from vegetation. My project is to, first, build a prototype for trace gas flux measurements. Then validate the instrument with a couple of field campaigns and inter-comparisons. Once I have plenty of data I will do some modeling work. That’s the plan. But meanwhile I’ll try to feed this blog with unpublished photos from my previous trips and also with new photos.

Enfin le printemps !

After several snow events, today, Sunday 19th (April) was very sunny and therefore warmer.

Of course I spent the day outside biking, hiking in the mountains and taking a lot of photos…

Back in town I stopped by my usual spot for photos, the ponds near pearl street.

I got a surprise :

A mink was wandering on the rocks, very curious and not afraid of me.

Hopefully I’ll see it more often now :)

Tough times for birds

While a big snowstorm in Boulder, I took some bird photos :

Here a blue bird and in the background a robin. Blue bird are usually in the mountains, this is the first time I see them in town. They would feed on the same tree where the robin were.

I love the color of these birds ! So blue !

On the ground dark-eyed junco were looking for food also :

Tundra Expedition

Sunday morning 6:30 AM, we’re driving up to the mountains. Oops, the car does not have enough clearance to overcome the snow on the dirt road. We need to find another hike. Newt ridge is not far, why not hiking to the tundra lab !

And here we are, above the tree line, the wind is blowing with some gusts reaching up to 23m/s. It’s only –8 degree C but the wind is freezing.

The tundra lab provide a shelter for a lunch break. The view is amazing.

The trail in the forest. We ended up hiking 8 miles in total, starting from 2900m elevation to 3530m.

New sport

This week I went rock climbing with Brian and Brie (they work at INSTAAR too). This sport is a lot of fun and require a lot of finger muscles ! We went two times this week, my arms and hands are so sore but I really enjoy it. Here are some picture of the place, it’s indoor :

Weekend in the mountains

Bear peak is one of the highest peak around Boulder city, the summit is a ridge of rocks. There are no trees to hide the view.

Back to France after 5 months spent abroad

I arrived on Saturday 13th in Toulouse. On Monday 15th, my first class was starting so I did not have so much time to get myself together. I was kind of jet-lag the first week and then got sick. Anyway, now I took the rhythm !

I have a lot to tell about my last vacations ! After the end of my internship I went to New York for a couple of days, then spent 7 days in Guatemala(!!!), went back to New York, from there flew back to Denver, rented a car and drove all the way up to The Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I was with a friend from my school in Toulouse for all these destinations. We were joined by two more french friends for the last trip.

I had a great time. And now it is time to study.

I'll try to post some photos of New York, Guatemala and Yellowstone.

For now, this is where I spent my weekend :

Falls colors, red deer in rutting season. The Pyrenees are beautiful mountains.

Hiking Longs Peak, 4346m !

This was the best hiking I ever did ! We started at 5:00 AM from the ranger station, in the dark.

We were three : JF, Marc and me. After reaching the tree line the sun showed up and the landscape was really beautiful. We could enjoy the the sunrise behind us.

The morning was fresh and it was nice to hike without the heat.

At some point the trail disappears and it's only rocks. There is a kind of campground before the hiking turn to almost climbing. The way go trough a opening in the rocks called the Key hole.

This hike is very crowded but still very enjoyable. The wind can be pretty strong and cold and it's a bit scary when the path is very narrow.

I could see some interesting wildlife and take some photos though I had only my 17-70mm with me.

I really liked this hike, 12km to get to the summit (4346m). I hope there will be many more...

Raccoons at night...

I found a new subject for my photos : raccoons. I found plenty of them close to the lake I'm use to go. They are curious and are not afraid of me which make it easy to get pictures.

Evil look ! I guess they see way better than me in the dark...

Rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Last Sunday we headed north, the go to Frontier days festival in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

I never been to a rodeo in my life before so I had to see that, at least once. It was fun

but I'm not sure I want to go again though. I let you see in images what it did look like :

July 3rd to July 7 : road trip to the south-west, Utah and Arizona !

On our way in order : Bryce Canyon, Lake Powel (and Horseshoe Bend), Grand Canyon, and Arches National park. We were three, two German friends Mathias, Dennis and me.

First it was a long drive to get to Bryce Canyon, about 8 hours. The landscape from the interstate 70 is pretty nice and we took some rest at gas stations or view point.

I took this picture from the rest area of the highway. Sunset light gives always awesome colors especially on a canyon.

We camped in Panguitch close to Bryce canyon the first night. So we spend Friday visiting and hiking in Bryce.

This is the result of weathering and it is really amazing all these shapes and colors.

So we spend some time hiking down in the canyon to appreciate the true dimension of the place.

We hit the road again the same day to reach a campground in the grand canyon area. On the way we stopped at Lake Powel (Page) but we discovered that there was boats and people all over the place so it was kind of a bummer. Anyway, we decided to not loose time there. Luckily we stopped at the horseshoe bend which is probably the most impressive thing I ever seen.

We made it to Grand canyon just for the sunset. Despite an overcast sky, I got some nice shots. We didn't stop long, finding a campground was more important.

The plan was to hike to the bottom of the canyon on Saturday. We started at 10 in the morning with a slight rain. The way down was easy but seems endless. We arrived at the Colorado river around 1:30, had lunch, put our feet in the verryyy cold water an head back by I different trail. The sky cleared around noon and it started to be really hot down there. I bet the temperature was close to 55°C.

The way back was long, very long, and it was hard to walk with this heat. We came back back on the south rim at about 20h30. We were all glad, and now we can say : we did it !

After Grand Canyon, Arches National Park.

Relative small park in a place where rocks turned into sand but not completely. Many big arches are standing all over the park.

We hiked few hours in there, desert hiking is fun but got to have a good hat !

That's it for this trip. What is the next one ? We'll see...

The MINK !

I still can't believe it... On Friday evening while I was walking around the lake in Valmont park near my place. I saw this incredible animal : a Mink !

Take a look at this :

C'est un vison. J'ai eu une chance incroyable de pouvoir l'apercevoir et en plus de le prendre en photo ! C'est un animal qui vit la nuit et qui est generalement tres difficile a observer.

This weekend was also a road trip to the sand dunes ! This time we were 7 people in a big SUV.

It was a fun trip and the place is really worth to see.

Weekend in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Road Trip to Yellowstone, for a three day weekend. A lot of road (8h driving from Boulder) but this park is so amazing. It gather high mountains (Grand Teton National Park, just before Yellowstone), a lot of active Geysers and so much wildlife !

It was a great trip and we could see so much scenery and wildlife...

Looking forward to go again !

This is a first try of an interesting feature of my camera. It does take pictures at set up intervals. It tried it while we were building a tower for future experiments.
The result is nice !

Hi all,

Always looking for new animals to photograph, I spent most of the weekend outside: biking in boulder's beautiful bike trails, or helping for the garden.

The weather is not so good as it use to be now but it let me some time to think and prepare the upcoming trips.

On Thursday 15th I'm leaving boulder for Los Angeles where I'll spend a 3 days weekend with a friend. Many plans are also made with my friends here in Boulder, hikes, tennis and others road-trips in Colorado.

In image now we first have Harold, the owl, he usually spend the day sitting high on a branch in a big tree around NCAR. This time I found him on the east side of NCAR close to the lake.

Isn't that beautiful ! Unfortunately it was cloudy and I had to push the ISO of ma camera up to 800 in order to get a decent picture. The grain is there but not so obvious.

Here is a humming bird in the foothills close to NCAR's Mesa lab:

I like these birds, so small, so noisy (!), and kind of cute.

We don't see on the pictures but their throat is really red when they are flying.

The next and last picture for this post is a view of bear peak and bear creek from the side of Mesa Lab's hill :

I also saw a golden eagle flying above Mesa Lab, carrying his meal, and heading to the flat irons !

Distracted prairie dog = meal for a fox

While a walk on the trails in Valmont park, we saw this fox hunting prairie dogs.

He was successful !

This is what the weather looks like this morning and today in Boulder :

This brings water to boulder which is good, it was very dry these times. Hopefully it will get more green in the mountains.

Snowkiting !

On Sunday, Thomas and me went up in the montains, at a big lake (frozen) for the last snowkite session of the season. I never saw this sport before. I can say that it is spectacular, I really like it ! It does require skills, in other words you have to know winds and stir the kite. You also need to know your limits ! The kite can bring you far and the landing can be painful. We had a great weather and hopefully you will like the pictures (on my flickr page)

I didn't try the big kite, but just played with a smaller kite and it's not easy !

Next trip : Rocky Montains National Park (saturday)

Les oiseaux

Un front froid passe sur Boulder ce weekend alors le temps est passe du grand soleil a tres couvert, froid et beaucoup de vent. Pas grand chose a faire quand il fait pas beau ici !

J'ai pris quelques photos quand meme !

Le ciel est bien noir mais pas de pluie ! Par contre aujourd'hui : neige et grand soleil, du jamais vu !!!

Un petit tour au lac en fin de journee.

Encore d'autres nouvelles photos sur ma page flickr, dont le nid des hiboux ! Et un autre site que j'ai decouvert avec des webcam sur des nids d'oiseaux don des aigles et balbuzard pecheur !

Un petit mot sur un de mes voisin, je ne sais pas comment il s'appelle mais tout les matins il prend le soleil dans notre arbre...

New gear !

Et voilà, c'est arrivé par la poste aujourd'hui, un petit objectif !

Objectif sigma 17-70mm

J'ai pas eu le temps de l'essayer trop encore mais il devrait être parfait pour les paysages, portraits et même macro photographie... !

Mon projet maintenant et de fabriquer une housse de protection pour tout ce beau matos !

A part ça pas trop de news pour l'instant, il fait toujours grand soleil ici et la température augmente de jours en jours (21°C aujourd'hui). La végétation reprend peu à peu de couleurs après l'hiver, il me tarde que tout soit vert ! Pour l'instant il fait très sec, l'herbe n'est pas très verte et les arbres commencent à peine à sortir les feuilles. Au boulot, je travaille en ce moment à construire un instrument de mesure qui servira à calculer des flux de COV émis par la forêt. Donc après la partie bricolage, j'entame maintenant la programmation du boîtier qui commande les différentes parties de l'instrument. Bien sûr le langage de programmation est propre à la marque qui fabrique le produit et donc est complètement inconnu pour moi, mais bon on va y arriver !

Ce soir, photos de groupe : ma proprio, mes colocs, le chien (Rosie) et moi.

Dans tout les cas vivement le week-end pour une nouvelle bonne rando en espérant moins de coups de soleil cette fois (oui oui, j'ai bien brûlé le week-end dernier).

Snowboard !!

Mercredi, tout le monde au ski !

Cela faisait longtemps qu'ils voulaient se faire une journée à la neige tous ensemble et j'ai eu la chance d'arriver au bon moment. Donc hier nous sommes partis avec quelques membres du groupe de recherche dans lequel je travaille, faire du ski a Loveland Colorado. La matinée était superbe et une tempête de neige est arrivée en milieu d'après midi. Résultat: on a bien profité et on est rentré dans un paysage tout enneigé.

Ce matin, petite promenade matinale avant d'aller au travail, pour prendre quelques photos (ici) de Boulder sous la neige avant que tout fonde. Au NCAR sur un coté du bâtiment principal niche un gros hibou !! Le chercheur qui a le nid en face de son bureau a eu la bonne idée de mettre une webcam en permanence pour suivre en direct sur le Web l'évolution de la petite famille. (voir en direct) J'ai croisé un des hiboux (great horned owl) en sortant du boulot ce soir :

Si le temps le permet je vais essayer le kiteskiing ce weekend avec un collegue du NCAR, il faut des conditions météo idéales pour en faire en toute sécurité. Donc si cela ce fait je mettrais en ligne des photos bien sûr !

Weekend in Bayonne !

Whith the two and a half weeks I had in Toulouse I decided to spend some time with a friend in Bayonne. I spent the weekend there and it was great !
We went to Biarritz to see a surf contest. Big waves !

We went also in the mountains, basque country is beautiful...
